AustArt - Australian art journals index

AustArt is an index of Australian art journals held in the College of Fine Arts Library, the University of New South Wales. Coverage is from 1987 to the present. This version of AustArt is temporary. The aim is to provide interim access to the AustArt data whilst a more user friendly version is under development.

Simple search option

• Searches by any word, (hence a search for 'howard, ian' will result in entries written about Ian Howard and also written by Ian Howard).
• Punctuation is important but capitalisation is not, (hence requirement to include a comma when searching a name e.g. 'howard, ian' ).
• Searches in the order of database entry, (hence surname, first name - if you search by ian howard (first name last name) in the simple search option your results will only be entries that mention him in the notes field).

Advanced search option

• Can be used for more precise searching by entering artist name (or subject ) in the Subject field.
• The Subject field includes all specific subject headings, whilst the Descriptive field includes other related keywords.
• The Descriptive field is used when the subject heading does not adequately explain the subject content. For example - in the same record you will find the following :
  Subject = abjection
  Descriptive = excrement ; blood ; urine ; body fluids
• Punctuation and capitalisation is not important.
• Does not search by order of entry so you can enter first name last name in the subject field.
• Publication months have been entered in a truncated form (e.g. December should be searched as dec).
• Publication years have been entered in a truncated form ( e.g. 2001 should be searched as 01).
• Please note that previous search terms may stay in the advanced search fields and should be cleared (if necessary) before starting a new search.

Exhibition reviews

For exhibitions involving 1-3 artists there is a subject entry for each artist & the exhibition title is given in the notes fields; for exhibitions involving 3+ artists a subject entry is made for each artist mentioned in the text, plus exhibition title in the notes, plus an extra subject entry for the exhibition title. This means that large group exhibition titles can be searched in the subject field. Smaller 1-3 artist exhibition titles need to be searched in the notes field.

Explanation of notes field

• col. ill. only or b&w ill. only indicates that the entry is for an illustration (without text).
• brief mention indicates that the artist's name is mentioned with very little extra information.
